I’ve only photographed one wedding there, but it instantly became one of my favourite London venues to work in - not just because it looks beautiful, but because what it stands for genuinely matters.
Grand, light and surprisingly intimate
The Foundling Museum has this rare balance. It’s grand without being overwhelming. Elegant without being stiff.
The main gallery room floods with natural light, with high ceilings and generous windows. It feels refined and considered - perfect for couples who want something classic but not traditional in a rigid way.
At the same time, it never feels cavernous or impersonal. The ceremony space and reception room have a warmth to them. Guests aren’t lost in the scale of the building. It still feels like your day, not like you’re rattling around in a big institution.
From a photography point of view, that combination is gold. Soft window light, neutral tones, beautiful architectural - but also intimacy, closeness and atmosphere.
Tucked away in leafy Bloomsbury
The museum describes itself as:
"We are a unique London museum that is tucked away in leafy Bloomsbury, telling the story of the UK's first children's charity and public art gallery."
That sense of being tucked away is real. It sits in the heart of Bloomsbury, and it is calm and leafy.
You can step outside and feel far from the chaos of London, even though everything is happening just a few minutes away. It’s incredibly central, yet it doesn’t feel hectic.
Right opposite is Brunswick Square Gardens - a lovely green space that’s perfect for couple portraits. We'll be back with your guests within 10-15 minutes.
A venue with real purpose
What makes the Foundling Museum stand out even more is its history and its work today.
It tells the story of the UK’s first children’s charity and public art gallery. And crucially, it’s not just a historic building hired out for weddings. It’s an active charity.
All income from weddings supports the Foundling Museum's charitable work with care-experienced people and those who care for them.
That matters to me.
Weddings are joyful, personal celebrations. Knowing that the venue fee is directly contributing to something meaningful adds another layer to the day. It’s not just a beautiful backdrop - it’s part of a bigger story.
Why it dovetails with my own ethos
I try to run my business in a way that reflects my own values. One small way I do that is by diverting £25 from every wedding booking to charity.
It’s not a marketing gimmick. It’s just something I think is right. If I’m lucky enough to do this job, and to document one of the most important days in someone’s life, I can also make sure a small part of that fee goes somewhere useful.
So when I photograph a wedding at the Foundling Museum, it feels aligned. A charitable venue. A couple celebrating something deeply personal. A day that, in a small way, also supports people who need it.
That alignment is rare.
A Bloomsbury wedding venue that feels different
There are plenty of impressive wedding venues in London. But very few combine:
beautiful light and architecture
a calm, leafy central location
an intimate atmosphere
and a genuine charitable mission
The Foundling Museum does all of that.
If you’re planning a wedding in Bloomsbury and want somewhere that feels elegant but human, refined but relaxed, and rooted in something meaningful, it’s well worth considering.
And if you do get married there, I’ll be very happy to come back!
