Southwark Register Office wedding photographer, South London
As a student at Goldsmiths College many years ago, I lived first in halls and then in a house share in Camberwell, around a ten minute walk from Southwark Register Office. I never really moved far away either - these days I live in Brixton, which is about 15 minutes on the 345 bus. Because of that, I know Camberwell and Peckham extremely well, and Southwark Register Office has become one of the places I’ve photographed most often over the years.
I’ve photographed dozens of weddings at Southwark Register Office, and that familiarity really matters. Civil ceremonies move quickly, and knowing the layout of the rooms, where the light falls at different times of day, and where to stand without getting in the registrar’s way makes a huge difference. It means I can focus on what’s actually important - the reactions, the nerves, the small moments between couples and their guests.
Southwark Register Office has a straightforward, unfussy feel that suits couples who want something relaxed and personal rather than overly formal. The ceremony rooms are clean and simple, which puts the emphasis firmly on the people rather than the surroundings. From a photography point of view, that simplicity works well. I’m used to working in the available light there, adjusting quickly as people move, and making sure skin tones stay natural even in mixed or slightly tricky lighting conditions.
One of the big advantages of getting married here is the surrounding area.
